As one of Mittenwald’s most important sports facilities, the ice hockey rink supports regional communities in a variety of winter sports. It hosts numerous training sessions and competitions in ice hockey, figure skating and ice stock sport each year.
As part of a technical upgrade, the Municipality of Mittenwald commissioned our office to redesign the facility for year-round use. Following a feasibility study and preliminary design, we developed an urban concept for a community ‘active campus’, featuring a prominent entrance connecting indoor and outdoor activities, including ice sports, football, a pump track, beach volleyball and recreation areas.
The ice rink has been resized in accordance with current standards to create space for changing rooms, sanitary facilities, offices and storage. The façade will be renewed using insulated metal sandwich panels combined with timber construction, reflecting the town’s architectural character. Its curved form draws inspiration from the dynamic movement of ice sports.
